Something just popped into my head just now. Figured I'd share it.
The linguistic-anthropology-type section of my brain got to thinking about how different the backgrounds of Goddard, Davenport and Harlan's regions of origin are. They say that eventually the Latino population of Los Angeles will become the majority, which I'm guessing would make Spanish more popular as the language spoken.
Then I thought about Goddard. I heard that there's are lot of controversy going down with bilingualism in Quebec (how you can only have English printed below the French on street signs and it has to be a smaller font size, etc.) and it would be a very logical possibility that in a couple hundred years French would be the dominant language spoken there.
Now, we don't know really what went down with Mars, but most people just kind of take it as read that Davenport is British cuz' of the accent (I could ramble on about how this might also be portraying a prestige form of whatever language she's using to make her self seem socially more presentable, but that's a whole other geek-tastic topic) and this could possibly mean that English as a language is in decline around the world by the UPP's time. Perhaps only people on Mars speak English anymore. XD Makes you wonder what the official language of Earth is. Another thing is that Goddard, Davenport and Harlan would all have to use that "official language" even when simply talking about non-school/non-crew related stuff. It would take away a bit of a cultural link between the three of them, making them seem just a little bit alien to even each other. Hm..
Wow, this is what happens when you sit around the house all day. @_@
