"...for thus, friends absent speak."
~ John Donne

Placed behind one of the flowers on the wreath, before it was pushed through the event horizon. She hadn't been able to stop crying since they'd returned without him.

Inscribed on the bookplate in the front of a lithographic copy of Copernicus' "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium". He left it beside her bed in the infirmary along with a paperback thriller. Her Latin was rusty, but by the end of the year she knew whole passages by heart.

Slipped into Daniel's hand, in answer to his look of concern. He'd felt like he'd intruded on a private moment and it took a while for the awkward sensation to pass.

At first she showed it to him as a joke and told him she'd judge his sanity by his response (he told her it was obviously a physical manifestation of the philosophy of space and time.) But later it became a regular past time to show it to people they encountered on other worlds.

Sam recorded their responses and made graphs and distribution models to explain why so many of the answers were similar. Daniel's method traced the links between cultures and etymology. They would spend long hours in discussion about how the universe was not really all that alien after all.

She sat with him, leaning against the bulkhead of the cargo ship and drew this diagram on one of her notepads. She was tired, so tired that she felt her edges start to blur and dissolve inwards. She couldn't explain it to him, but he held her hand while she pulled her mind back in to place.

He wrote down the koans the monk had recited when he returned to the SGC. He often flipped through the set of index cards, seeking the elusive fulfilment that he had been promised. Sam kept this card among her personal items during the year that he was ascended.

Daniel arrived at the reception early, and removed Jack's place card. It was Sam's big day, and he didn't want it to remind her that he hadn't come to her wedding.
