Completing my PhD studies over the last 5+ years has truly been a rewarding and humbling experience. First and foremost, I extend my sincere gratitude to God (Glory and Greatness be to Him) for bestowing upon me a life full of bounties. You alone do I worship, and you alone do I seek for help […] Thus, it has been rewarding to contribute to scientific knowledge with a doctoral dissertation, and even more rewarding and humbling to recognize that this document is a small subset of all scientific knowledge, which is a small subset of the Divine knowledge.

Words cannot express my deepest thankfulness to God. I simply could not dismiss His constant guidance through various people as merely a long series of lucky incidences, as I reflect on how I have reached this far into the field of scientific research, all the way beginning from the change of my major from mathematics to chemistry and then the incorporation of physics, to the decision-making process of my coming to Caltech, to my entering Dr. Ahmed Zewail’s group and then switching to the current research direction, with the spiritual support for me to hold on this path and, finally, to the result of many previous publications and the formation of this thesis.

Finally, and most importantly, I am thankful to the one who puts dreams in our hearts to inspire us to strive for these goals: Jesus Christ, creator of the universe and my personal savior. I have been so delighted to look into nature and see the mind of God displayed in the intricately embedded designs. Moreover, it is miraculous to me that we search out and understand the inner workings of nature and apply that understanding to improve other’s well-being and life here. I am thankful for this beautiful world and for my brief time to work and delight in it, knowing that it is but a shadow of things to come.

Lastly, I offer a sincere and heartfelt acknowledgement to God, our Heavenly Father, the creator of all things, and His son and our Savior Jesus Christ, for all that I have and am. I am particularly grateful for the beauty and wonder of the natural world and our ability to understand what little of it we can. I have come to believe that scientific research at the highest level can draw one as close to God as many religious pursuits and that it can deepen one’s reverence and awe for the Creator rather than dispel it.
