Metamorphosis

Ianto/Jack

Saw this quote in Barnes and Noble and immediately thought ‘Ianto’.

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly. - anonymous

Ianto Jones thought of his life in two parts, BH and AH. Before Harkness and after Harkness.

Before Harkness, he was the quiet, faithful Ianto. Trained by Torchwood One, he was ‘support’. As in ‘don’t say a word and do as you’re told’ support. Never questioning, never wanting more, never having an opinion.

Boring.

Then, Canary Wharf happened, and he had moved onto Torchwood Three for Lisa. He blended into the shadows, worked his coffee magic and wrapped his secrets tightly around himself. It should have ended there; that was the plan. Lisa would be healed, human again, and they would ride off into the sunset, finding boring jobs in a small, boring town in Wales and living a perfectly wonderful, if boring, normal life.

But his world, had indeed, come to an end.

Ianto discovered that the girl he had loved was long gone and had left behind a monster. Ianto discovered that his life, his dreams, his plans, were a sham. Ianto discovered he had nothing left and WANTED his world to end.

And then came Harkness.

Jack Harkness, the antithesis of Torchwood One. He could have ended things for Ianto, finished the job when the cyberwoman had failed. For a time, Ianto would have welcomed a bullet to the brain. Certainly, Yvonne would have been happy to do it for him.

For some reason, Jack thought Ianto, the Torchwood One refugee, worth saving. Jack took him to Brecon Beacons with the team, to be a part of the team. That is when Ianto first started to believe that Jack had done the right thing. He thought that there was a glimmer of hope left, life after Lisa.

Sometimes he would play the “what if” game. What if Lisa had lived and he had never met Jack. Life with Lisa would have been nice. Life with Jack was not nice. It was grimy, hazardous, painful, and disturbing. Jack had shown him a world beyond the desk job of Torchwood One. He hadn’t been allowed to sink back into the shadows, cocooned in wool and cotton. Jack pushed him, cajoled him, and challenged him to become more.

Standing at the open window, Ianto gazed at the three moons in the alien sky. His eyes wandered to stare at the dull light that Jack has said was Earth. Warm hands started to caress his shoulders and he smiled.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” Jack questioned quietly.

Ianto turned to embrace the other man. “You.” He brushed his lips against the other man’s. “Thank you for teaching me to fly.”

Jack laughed. “It’s easy with a Tardis.” He tugged at Ianto’s arm gently. “Come back to bed. Plenty of time for alien sightseeing tomorrow.”

As Jack climbed back into bed, Ianto took one last look at the spot of light that was supposedly Earth. When he had lost Lisa, he thought his world has ended. Thankfully, the whole universe had been waiting just around the corner for him.
