*facepalm* why hasn't HCI always been like this?

you are probably asking "what the hell is that?"

don't worry, i was asking the same thing, until i saw the video (click on the image). it's an input device consisting of a camera and a force feedback pad. it gets special powers (multiple fingers for input, scaling, rotation, and more) when using their proprietary drawing app, but also works well as an input device for the os and other applications, similar to a trackpad.

it's neat, and i like the idea of force feedback for user interaction with gui elements, but i think it would hold more promise if it were integrated into laptops (the camera could double as a conferencing camera when directed at the user (like the camera built into old sony picturebooks)).

what i want is a powerbook with a small isight integrated above the display (don't laugh, the new imacs have this), and the whole area below the keyboard being this new input pad. it could be used like a standard trackpad, or also in the ways pioneered by the tactiva folks. when the user was typing and resting palms on the pad, it would ignore the input.
