Simply Fucking Amazing

The background we hopefully all know by now: 377 tons of high explosives, previously monitored by the IAEA, were left unguarded and looted after the invasion. People who know have written that the majority of explosives deployed against U.S. troops and our Iraqi allies in the last 18 months were made from the looted explosives. In other words, American soldiers are dying because Bush and his underlings failed to secure the munitions.

Initially, Bush's supporters went on defense with a number of conflicting lies and spin:
  • This means they had WMD. -- Nice try, but WMD never meant conventional explosives.
  • It's not all that important, and you can buy it anywhere. -- Is that why you mentioned it in the run-up to war?
  • It was like that when we got there. -- Clear video evidence proves otherwise.
  • The Russians moved it to Syria. -- Are you fucking kidding me?

None of this is surprising so far. Incompetence followed by excuses is typical Bush m.o. But here's where it gets really surreal:

Kerry, to Bush: You were warned to guard them. You didn't guard them.
Bush, responding: The senator is denigrating the action of our troops and commanders in the field without knowing the facts.
Giuliani, defending Bush: No matter how you try to blame it on the president, the actual responsibility for it really would be for the troops that were there. Did they search carefully enough? Didn't they search carefully enough?

I'm stunned.

Satire has always had its place in politics, but today it seems especially necessary. The clowns running this country have become so absurd that it's impossible to discuss them with a straight face. So read the Onion, Get Your War On, Flak Magazine, Fafblog!, and America (The Book), grit your teeth, and hope things get a lot better next week.
