Poison Ivy from your dog

Just recently read an article about whether or not a dog or cat can give infect you with poison ivy or poison oak. Of course the answer is yes. Turns out though that your pet may not be effected from the plant but you can get a rash from petting your pet.

For those who don't know the rash that you get from poison ivy and poison oak comes from an oil that the plant's secrete, when this oil gets on you it causes a rash. And the oil, acts like an oil, not coming off of hair easily, and floating on water. Which reminds me of a story I heard from a friend. Her husband went hiking and ended up with poison ivy, he came home and took a bath (something you should never do if you have poison ivy) he submerged his head under the water and when he got out of the bath found he had poison ivy all over his body, even in his orifices, which meant poison ivy inside him. He ended up having to go to the hospital for treatment. So remember, if you get poison ivy or poison oak or if you see your dog brush up against some rinse them off with a hose or shower head, and take a shower yourself. Do not take a bath, you will only make things worse, and do not give your dog a bath in standing water, chances are you will spread the oil to other parts of their coat.

Just a friendly warning for your summer time fun!
