Tonight there is a writers group at the public library. A friend of mine who attends the meetings invited me to come with her. I am fairly excited about it as this will be the second physical writers group I will have attended.
I am anxious to see what it will be like. The first writers group I attended was one that I helped to create while I was in college. I was attending Utah State University and my friend
leggsrobbins came up with the great idea of creating a writers group. Along with
piseag and myself we created a University writers group (I think there was a community writers group going on as well) and we were able to recruit a few people to come to our meetings. I think we held weekly meetings during which we learned quite a lot about each other. There was drama that came out of those meetings as well as some fantastic writing. At the end of the year we created a book of some of our favorite writings and we passed out copies to each member. I kept the excess copies for quite some time before I finally had to cut my bookshelf down to only one copy.
I have such fond memories of those meetings, there were some very interesting things that happened during that year, but I think the whole thing helped us all grow and it created a friendship that has now lasted for years. I don't know that this writers group will hold as many memories as my last one did, but either way it allows me to get my work read and have people help me edit it. It is one of the most difficult parts of writing, getting people to read it and then help you edit it. I look forward to having the opportunity again.
