My UPS package containing the 5 yards of silver taffeta finally arrived yesterday. It's amazing how shipping can beat up a box so much, but the fabric inside was undamaged. There was a plastic sleeve on the outside of the box maked PACKING SLIP in neon orange; normally, chemicals and equipment arrive at my lab with the same markings, so I was amused.
I felt some trepidation when I first pulled out the fabric, as it was a dull grey without the subtle sheen and dupioni-like crinkle slubs. Thankfully, it turned out to be the 'wrong' side, and I was relieved to see the front looked better. Not *quite* as pretty as in the picture, but I imagine they were taking the photo in a studio with flash, etc that played up the metallic quality of the weave. It's got a fairly crisp hand, not as soft as I'd hoped, but falls well when hand-gathered into pleats.
I'm on the fence as to whether I'll line it or not. The airy swishy appearance is what I wanted, but at the same time it might drape better with a lining. It is a 100% synthetic, which means it won't breathe as well as my red silk gown (silk with synthetic metallic threads). On the other hand, I might end up wanting more body to the skirt. Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer for the coordinating sari fabric to arrive so I can decide how the whole thing will come together. Still thinking of cutting bands of sari border to trim the taffeta with, and that should lend a nice weight to the skirt.
