Last night, I got the bright idea to take My Girl to a Japanese noodle restaurant in Hollywood. I'd been there several times before, and the food is quite good and reasonably priced. We breezed in, memories of noodley love past dancing on my tastebuds, and sat at a table, right beside each other. After all, it was chilly, and I was out with My Girl, so sitting together and holding hands while consuming warm comforting soup seemed like it would be such a nice experience.

We pondered the menu and made our selections. The waitress seemed a little nervous, but whatever. A little later, she comes back mumbling something about My Girl sitting in the seat across the way when the food comes. I thought they were worried about where to place the food at the table, as it was rather small. I just told her to put the food down and we'd work it out. Soon, she came back with miso soup, and placed it clearly on the other side of the table. We pulled it to us, and My Girl and I took a few sips. It was quite good.

Soon, the waitress was back, insisting that we not sit together, that My Girl had to sit across the way. I asked why. She said we made the other guests uncomfortable (for the record, the restaurant had maybe five other people, none of whom appeared disturbed in the least by two girls sitting closely together). The manager followed soon behind. Our food arrived. He very sternly ordered us to sit apart, that we could not sit together. I was incredulous. "Are you kidding?" "No, I'm not kidding." "But why?" "You cannot sit together. ... It's our policy." I turned to My Girl and asked if she wanted to go. He replied for her, "Yes. You go."

We went.

So, to those that might feel that discriminating against gays is unreasonable, please do not frequent this restaurant:

Atch Kotch Japanese Restaurant

I must add that we went immediately thereafter to Monsieur Marcel Pain Vin et Fromage, a lovely French Bistro at the Farmer's Market (6233 West 3rd Street, LA, CA. 323-939-7792). We were greeted warmly. I asked if they would have any qualms seating as, as we were two women together. They looked perplexed. I explained what had just transpired at the previous restaurant, and they were incredulous. We were welcomed to sit anywhere, treated beautifully and ate a wonderful meal.
