I'm scared. But after tonight talking to mom I'm determined as well.
We're gonna fight. As the song from Public Enemy goes, "were gonna fight the powers the be." It's gonna be a scary 4 years---but we need to do all we can. Yes fleeing to Canada still seems attractive, but why leave your problems behind? Stay here, fight for our rights. Fight for the poor, fight for the soilders, fight for GLBT rights, fight for women's rights. Bush will probably use his power to elect an ultra conservative judge to the supreme court in the next four years. . .
We need to REALLY get into politics now. Yes, these past four years I've done little things here and there, volunteering at Pride occasionally. But now, we REALLY need to get INVOLVED. Increase the number of voters at the polls. Get the democratic party back together again for the next round. Keep our eyes on the "Pro familiy" and "pro life" organizations. Do what we can.
As
Leslie Feinberg mentioned a few nights ago at a wonderful presentation at UMASs...the beginning of the Gay Revolution was just sparked a mediocre 35 years ago, and we've come a long way. That night at Stonewall people in drag fought against the cops at a time when no one would have given a shit if they went to jail or died.
If Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out against segregation in the 1960's at a time when he could (and knew) he was going to die. . . they did the hard work for us.
We need to pick up Stonewall, The Civil Rights Movement, Roe V. Wade. . . and continue what they started for us.
I'm still scared, but I can't just sit here and let things slide. I have my life to take care of. I have other people to take care of. And I hope others will take care of me as we all unite in this together.
Lets just hope I don't post this and then forget about this declaration- like people do with new year's wishes. Thats just as bad.
