Let us be perfectly clear.
Spider-Man 3...is crap. Worse yet...it's EMO CRAP.
Now, lest you think the 'Civil War' hate has carried over into the movies, let me assure you-the reason I went to see this at all was because I thought perhaps that the Movies would hold onto the (Admittedly small) things that made Marvel Worthwile.
Spider-Man 2 was excellent. One of the few things I can respect about a hero is doing what must be done at a cost to oneself. The scene where he gets mashed into the front of a train trying to keep it from crashing? That's Epic Stuff. Even though I don't buy into Marvel's 'Everyman' attitude about Superheroes, Spider-Man was a guy with a solid heart.
IN 3, that is taken away. Now, Yes, I know that the Symbiote, etc, etc. Seriously, don't hand me that. The part I'm talking about is the 'before'. This guy, who has fought so hard for this girl, is suddenly insensitive to shifts in her mood? Unsupportive? So Full of himself that he'd KISS ANOTHER GIRL ON CAMERA?
Yes, Kirsten Dunst is a shrieking moo-cow. STILL. The Hell happened to Peter Paker? Tobey Macguire seems a flatter person here. There's no sense of an 'ideal' he's trying to live up to, or even an underlying goodness. And the addition of the symbiote is even worse. The message here seems to be 'Everyone, no matter how good, has an ugly core, waiting to be let free.'
This is not an uplifting, or even determined message. Marvel has, in general, completely lost touch with what Superheroes are supposed to be, in favor of showmanship. Civil War, Spider-Man 3...
DC manages at least to not lose sight of the message-they did a Justice League Season Long Storyarc on the same issues confronted in 'Civil War'. And they managed to hold onto the message, even at the low point, where Superman was mad at everyone, and Wonder Woman was losing it, and Batman was pulling away...there was a clear message. Captain Marvel even said it. "This is not what Heroes are supposed to be."
There's a Certain Irony in Having Captain -Marvel- have the best grasp on what being a Hero is all about.
Since the company that shares his name no longer has a clue.
