Tenth Rabbit : Waxing Crescent : Text

If I remember correctly, this should be about the lunar new year right now!

Well, I think. I'm not really sure, to be honest, since the moons here are different and I haven't been able to see the one at home in so long...

But happy new year anyway!

Does anyone have an idea on which animal it should be? I vote for rabbit!

What do animals have to do with a new year?

In the lunar calendar where I'm from, every cycle is associated with a different animal, with twelve all together.

And there's a story to go along with the order of the animals.

The Emperor decided that there should be a race to decide the order of the animals in the calendar cycle. Thirteen animals participated, but only the first twelve were chosen. The ox and the rat got to the river at the end of the race first, and the rat rode across on the ox and jumped off first, so he won.

And then... the tiger was able swim across himself, and the rabbit floated across on a log. The dragon came fifth, which was surprising, but he had stopped to make rain so that people had water.

Let's see... the snake and horse... Oh! The horse had come on its own and swam across the river, but the snake was hidden on the horse's leg. When the horse saw it, it was startled, so the snake was sixth and the horse seventh.
