I just got a letter from Johnson & Wales about their Honors Program, specifically, the Literature end of it.
They tell me that "the freshman in the Honors Program will meet with Michael C. White to discuss the implications of the modern novel with the discussion focusing on his novel, A Brother's Blood. Following that, they give me a list of 10 novels/plays, 21 poets, and 7 dramatists that I should be "familiar" with, although they aren't required reading. And then, to top it off, to remain eligible for my $10,000/year Chancellor's Scholarship, I must pay my dues for enrollment in the "Chancellor's Circle".
I guess this is a good thing, something to get me off my ass during school so I know I'll be working hard, but why is there such a hardcore concentration on literature? I hate focusing so much on literature that I don't enjoy. It's not too bad, I guess, because some of the books/authors I've read in school, and two of the books I planned on reading this summer anyways (Lord of the Flies; 1984) and another I heard was good (Catcher in the Rye), but the others I really don't care about.
As long as the math is challenging, I'll enjoy it I suppose.
