X-Factor #242: Summary
I doubt that I'm going to be able to do nearly as good a job as our regular summarizer, but I'll do my best for those of you who don't have access to the new issue yet. :)
For the record, there's a huge red X over Guido's summary box in the character list at the beginning of the issue.
As we saw in the preview, the comic opens with Darwin chasing Tier - Rahne's son - with a very high-tech gun. Jack Russell jumps in to try to protect the boy, and we find out that Darwin's powers are evolving thanks to everything that happened with Hela. His powers don't just affect him; now they can affect others in order to protect him. So, for example, he can turn Jack from a wolf back into a man in the middle of a fight in order to knock him unconscious.
Meanwhile, Old!Trypp has brought Vanora to watch everything that's going on. He explains to her that Tier is her brother, in a sense. Before he can explain anything else, though, he suddenly panics and declares: "He's found me. He's coming. [...] He's about to release an attack and I dare not be here when it comes."
Trypp disappears, and Vanora goes to fight Darwin in order to protect Tier. She grabs the kid, who's aging at superhuman speed by the way, and makes a run for it.
Darwin gets ready to shoot him from a distance until Rictor appears and tells him to put the gun down. Apparently he, Shatterstar, and Rahne fought their way through Hel, found Hrimhari, and received a mystic amulet to guide them to Rahne's kid. (Fic, please?)
The two of them face off, and a thought bubble lets us know that Darwin isn't aware that Rictor has his powers back.
Elsewhere, Rahne stumbles upon Vanora and Tier. Vanora immediately tries to attack her.
Rictor uses his powers against Darwin when he refuses to back down, much to Darwin's surprise. Darwin goes falling off a cliff, and - instead of growing wings - he lets himself fall because he knows that he's going to kill Rictor despite himself if they keep fighting.
Rahne is still fighting Vanora, and she starts to get the upper hand. Tier jumps at Rahne, trying to get her to leave his new friend alone, when he finally realizes who she is. Rahne turns back into her human form and hugs him, swearing that she'll never leave him alone again. Vanora takes advantage of that and jumps at both of them...
... just in time for Shatterstar to run his blades through her.
'Star teleports them to a safehouse of Wolverine's in Canada, and Rahne tells Rictor and Shatterstar that she's going to stay there with Tier for the time being. He's not ready for New York. Tier tentatively asks if Jack can stay as well, and Rahne says that's up to Jack.
Rictor: And what about the debt you owe Star and me? I want you to come back. Or is that just being selfish?
Rahne: Aye. And I don't want to leave ye. And that's selfish too. Mebbe that's why we were drawn to each other. Two selfish, self-deluded people.
Then Rictor and Rahne hug and say their goodbyes.
