So, yeah. Another reason why I'm liking this country less and less. My partner just read a news article saying that two companies, Union Pacific (railroad) and some lawn goods maker or something, won't hire you if you smoke. Also, a couple of clinics in Ohio, I think, won't hire and make you take blood nicotine tests

I don't think jobs are going to be critical in all your given aspects, though, but maybe that's just because I'm being naive. People have been hiring lots of diverse sorts of people. I'm not trying to advocate trying to hide who you are, but you're not being paid to show off your sexuality, social status, etc etc. While I have no problem telling people if they ask about me, I do not see the point in divulging the information, which is mostly not mandatory on applications.
I don't know if I've actually responded to anything and I really hope I don't sound silly and ignorant.

I don't see a problem with hiring coverage cost if you smoke, but...
Well, currently, most jobs want you to avoid mentioning affiliations such as "Berkeley Buddhist Temple Luncheon Club Chairman" or whatnot, but if they're going to choose random discriminatory fiters like that, "What's next?" Is kind of what I'm saying.
And no, you don't sound ignorant :)
