The world's largest cruise liner has canceled its next stop at Port Everglades, adjusting its schedule after a mishap leaving the Broward County seaport last month.
The Queen Mary 2 plans to call on Broward again when it resumes Americas service this fall, following trans-Atlantic and Mediterranean voyages during the spring and summer, a spokeswoman for Cunard Line said Friday.
The one-time cancellation comes after the megaship, with 2,543 passengers aboard, sideswiped a channel wall on its way out of Port Everglades on Jan. 17, damaging one engine pod and reducing its speed. Operating with three pods instead of four, it needed to adjust its itinerary, said spokeswoman Jackie Matthews.
The schedule change miffed Fort Lauderdale resident Dorothy Mars, who had booked a cruise with her husband to depart Los Angeles on March 8 and return to Port Everglades in April.
"The whole idea of booking the trip the way we did was so when we arrive, we can just jump in a cab and come home," Mars said Friday.
Still, Cunard is offering compensation to affected passengers. The Mars can leave their cruise in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, or in New York, and then, fly at Cunard's expense to South Florida. They'll get a one-day refund for departing in St. Thomas, or two free days for continuing to New York, plus a $50 per person onboard credit, Matthews said.
