Happy California Annexation Day! On July 7, 1846, California was annexed by the United States.
During the Mexican-American War, Commodore John Drake Sloat, Commander-In-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Squadron, aboard his flag ship SAVANNAH, ordered his troops to occupy Monterey and Yerba Buena (San Francisco). On July 7, 1846, Sloat raised the U.S. flag over the Customs House at Monterey and issued a proclamation announcing that California was now part of the United States.
