The Scooby Doo / Doctor Who Connection

A few posts back, I mentioned how the Doctor Who RPG could be easily ported to a Scooby Doo game. The thoughts haven't gone away, and I realized how similar the shows actually are ( Read more... )

It's not Doctor Who crossed with Scooby that would make the best fanfic. It's Sarah Jane Adventures crossed with Scooby. That team is teenaged and they have a K-9 of their own.

I liked the first 2 movies with the monsters being real (Zombie Island and...the next one) that followed with the Daphne's TV show premise and had a song about the monsters being real this time.

And I'm not sure Daphne belongs as a "Doctor" as she's more often the Jo Grant style prisoner companion. And Scooby and Shaggy, while often getting into it...are rarely rescued by the others..rather they overcome their fears and do the rescuing.

Indeed, I believe that Velma is the only Doctor type character. Daphne merely states the obvious, and Fred makes plans that never succeed. Do not be fooled by the ascot/knit scarf connection!

I think a strong case can probably be made that Velma is, in fact, a Time Lord.

Granted, my knowledge of Scooby Doo lore is heavily weighted towards the What's New Scooby Doo era and the made-for-DVD movies, but Daphne doesn't get captured that often.

Daphne's job in the "competent side" of the Scooby Gang appears to be "the one who talks to the locals." Daphne smooths things over with townies when Shaggy and Scooby eat all the town's ham or something. And she usually asks the leading questions to get the suspects talking. Presumably that's why she was the TV host in those two films.

I do know Daph is hard to give an easy shtick to. The Pup Named Scooby Do made her "The Rich One" and the live action films had her transform herself into Action Girl.

In the original, she was known as "Danger Prone Daphne"...doing things like getting her nail caught in the haunted house organ that controlled the traps ( ... )

There was some kind of power in a Marvel Superheroes supplement, "Troubleseeker" or something. It basically means that your character is drawn to adventure situations. The range of it depends on your character's travel abilities--if you happen to have Teleportation through space and time, then you can get called anywhere, anywhen.

When I read that, I thought first of Doctor Who, and then I thought of the Magic School Bus. Obviously Ms. Frizzle is a Timelord too.
