Look to the Past

We've all heard the saying "Look to the future" but I don't think anyone's ever questioned it seriously before. We've also heard "Don't get stuck in the past" and other such quotes, but why? Do we not get our most profound thoughts and ideas from things that've happened to us in the past? It is beyond impossible to predict the future for anyone while the past is always predictable.
For example: I will most likely have an apple for breakfast.                         Not a certainty. I could want cereal instead.
America was originally inhabited by what Christopher Columbus mistook as Indians.            Certainty that will never change.
So why then must I always try to change my future for the better? I would rather carefully analyze my past to know what I did right and what I did wrong. By that small act I would evolve to do what I had done right and stop doing what I had done wrong, making me a better person. If I look to the future all I see is a massive puzzle full of knots and misplaced pieces and even a few extra pieces that aren't necessary. Why look forward when the past is so very crystal clear?

With that, all I can say to you is that the future will always trick you, so look to the past instead.
