I’m quite surprised at the way my dad seems to have settled down in the new house. He seems quite okay, and my mum hasn’t reported any severe disorientation at all. Of course, for the last few months the evidence of their imminent removal has been all around him, although he did at one point ask what all the boxes were for and my mum told him that they were moving the following week, to which his reply was,

"Well, nobody bothered telling me!"

I reckon it must have sunk in, though, somehow. And my mum leaves a light on the landing for him, and the bathroom door open, so he doesn’t try to go downstairs in the night when he needs the loo.

He’s very acquiescent, most of the time, seeming quite happy just to toddle around after my mum and go with the flow. He rarely participates in conversations, just listening and making the odd interjection if his interest is sparked. He seems quite content.

As for my mum, she is much happier and more positive than I have seen her for months now. The relief is obvious, after what has been a truly horrendous time. Her physical health is pretty poor, although she soldiers on, but psychologically she is now in a much better place to cope with it all.

I’ve popped in to do little jobs etc every day since they moved in, and they’re all settled in. Much of the stuff will be kept in boxes in the two small bedrooms, but she’s unpacked enough to make it look homely, and I think they’ll be pretty happy there while the extension’s being built. As for me, I am really enjoying being able to pop in regularly and help out. It makes such a difference.
