Today we are setting up the tree.
This brings back a lot of memories for me. The first tree that we had while living here after my parents divorced six years ago, we were too poor to afford pretty much any decorations…not to mention presents or even food at times.
But…
This will be the first year that we are celebrating together as a family, although my dad won’t be there, we are going to visit him.
Anyway, the first Christmas of having divorced parents, my mom bought this tiny fake tree. We couldn’t afford ornaments so we used stuffed animals and anything that would look pretty. It was probably the most memorable Christmas tree I ever recall. Everyone had given something for that Christmas to be put on the tree, so everyone had something to share. Although it had built in lights, they weren’t considered the prettiest. Despite the fact that we didn’t have ornaments or anything…we were very happy that year. We had stockings and maybe a present or two, but it was really the first Christmas that my mom was our only parent.
This year we can do pretty much anything we want! We will put one stuffed animal as tradition, but it will be probably the most gorgeous tree we’ve had this year. I’ve been so proud how far we’ve come to living in a four bedroom apartment with eight people to living in a house that few of us actually have to share a room and have three new members of our family. (Discounting in-laws, which would make it 10 new family members)
It’s been a fantastic year…
I can’t help recall that we were too poor at some point that we couldn’t afford ornaments…but we were still incredibly happy.
We are even happier now.
Here's our tree this year...
