An Unique and interesting wine.

So, the economy is taking a dive. Prices for everything are going up and you still hope to heat your house during the coming winter. You may be thinking you will have to reign in some of the "luxury expenses"

Well, I'm not about to give up my weekend wine and anime enjoyment! So, while I watch my retirements funds go down like Kimbo Slice, the next few wines that I review will be in the "under $20" range.

We can start with a HUGE tasting wine that I found with a rather small price.

Mesa Buio Carignano 2005

Varietal: 100% Carignane AKA Carignano grape

Country: Italy

Region: Sardinia

Alcohol: 13.5%

Availability: Uncommon: Available some online shops for about $15

This bold wine is BIG. From the overly thick and heavy bottle to the massive amount of flavors inside you feel you are getting more then you are paying for. While this wine was only about $15 a bottle I can see it one day being released at a $30 price point.

While technically from Italy it is not from the normal "boot" part. Sardinia is the large island in front of the middle part of the "boot" (not to be confused with Sicily that is at the tip of the boot) This newer winery breaks from tradition of the area (thank god, Sardinia for years was known to made some horrible, cheap bulk wines) and brings to us a very unique, bold and drinkable wine.

This was made from 100% Carignano grapes from their region. Carignano was a new varietal for me and I got to say I liked it.

The color was dark and inky almost like a blackberry jam. Not one you want to spill on anything white. The nose was very fragrant with dark fruit, some herbs, smoke and a bit of leather. A very full bodied wine that coats your entire mouth. The flavors of Blackberry jam and red fruits finished with a nice pop of black pepper. Firm tannins hold it all together rather nicely.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try something "different and unique" This is not your normal red wines. This will kick you in the mouth if you are not ready for it. I will suggest two things. 1. Decant this for at LEAST an hour, more if you can wait for it. 2. Do not drink it if you are in the mood for something lite and fruity. This isn't it and your taste buds will be overpowered.

Food: This will hold up with the biggest meals. I'd pair this with the juiciest steak you can find or the heartiest of meat dishes. Just don't pair this with anything delicate.
