I went to the Diliman central post office yesterday to mail some documents back to Singapore. I came around 1150am, just before having lunch with a friend.
To my surprise, all the windows were unmanned, and the place smelled like tuyo and kamatis - which only means one thing: LUNCH BREAK. Now this does not make sense. How can a post office go on a lunch break? Isn't that supposed to be one of the peak periods because it's the only time working people are free?
But I digress. I managed to call someone. She ambles over and talks to me, while showing me her amazing chewing powers.
Me: Saan po ba pwedeng bumili ng stamp?
Postal girl: Doon po sa window 24.
Me: Eh walang tao eh!
Postal girl: Lunch break na kasi eh.
Me: Eh di ba 12 pa? Eto o, nasa sign (points to sign)
Postal girl: Ah... eh...di pa ba 12?
Me: 10 minutes pa kaya!
Postal girl: Ah, sige, punta ka dun sa window 12. Sabihan ko yung kasama ko.
I then walk over to window 12, where Postal Girl #2 weighs my envelope, and charges me P40 to send it. Before she did that however, she fixes the "Closed" sign as if to emphasize that she was doing me a favor.
I love the Third World.
