Resto-Rant: Khao Chae at Ging Kalaprapruk

Just came back from lunch with my Thai sister in law at Ging Kalaprapruk in Siam Paragon. I've been going to this restaurant religiously for the cheap but good Thai food they serve, and it did not disappoint today.

I have been wanting to try Khao Chae ever since I saw an article in the papers last week. Khao Chae is literally "Rice in Jasmine Water". It is served usually only during Songkran, or the Thai New Year, which also coincides with the summer months. Because of the hot weather, this is actually a perfect dish to cool off.

It's actually rice submerged in water with jasmine flowers and ice. It reminds me of congee, but the rice here is still whole, not mashed. It also smells of the Jasmine flowers, which makes it really enticing.

You are then supposed to eat it with the many condiments it is served with. The version I had was served with sweet tuyo (fried salty fish), shrimp paste balls (bagoong balls), bread-crusted stuffed onion, stuffed chili pepper covered with crispy egg noodle, and a salted egg yolk. The dishes are a little hard to describe but that's as descriptive as I can get.:-)

Basta, yummy! A great way to cool down after dodging all those water guns. :-)
