Thoughts on Vacations

It's vacation time once again in Manila, as evidenced by the throngs of Pinoys I keep seeing all over Bangkok. Dong and his partner likewise left for Bali this weekend, and I am left experiencing the City of Angels by my lonesome - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;-)

Before he left, we got to talking about taking vacations in general. I was helping him 'plan' his Bali trip and I was honestly surprised that he was packing the schedule too much. Then again, I have always traveled 'easy', throwing schedules to the wind. If I'm on vacation, I would much rather relax - wake up whenever and do whatever. I have enough workdays in a year where I am compelled to follow a strict agenda.

Same goes for bringing my work laptop. Learned this back when I was in BCG where the rule was to leave laptops in the office, so someone else could access my client files when I am away. The true test of a great manager is being able to vanish for a week and work running smoothly.

The other 'rule' I follow is not to scrimp while on vacation. If I am able to afford that plane ticket, why would I deprive myself of nice restaurants, fantastic shopping and relaxing massages? Kung magpapakahirap din lang naman ako, eh di sa bahay nalang ako. I got this from my mom. Smart lady.

Hmmm... it's time for me to get a Thai massage now.... Heaven...
