What you're looking for is to become a PAL, which stands for Playspace Activity Leader. Basically you come in once a week and play with cute small things for two hours. It will be in a playspace within the shelter or community center. There are about 140+ to choose from in the state, 53 and counting in the Greater Boston area alone.
You will get volunteer partners so you will not be alone.
It's fun and challenging. They do ask that you commit for at least 6 months because adults come and go in these kids' lives so they want part of the volunteering to be to provide something stable in the kids lives. i have been doing this since about February 2007.

There is a training, which is actually really great and inspiring and fun and it's only a couple days that you come in (at a library or community center) and then you list your preferences and they place you.
