addendum: It was 'invented' accidentally in a restaurant on the Old Post Road on the way to Cape Cod, called The Toll House. Making that accident the singular claim to fame of one of the dullest 3 square miles of humanity in the history of the world. I grew up there and had my wedding reception there. The beautiful old colonial building has since been modernized and then demolished.

That's very interesting - I didn't even know about them until about 20 years ago. I love a hazelnut and choc chip buttery version that I sometimes buy at Morrisons
Interesting about the chocolate chip biscuits - I'd have thought they were invented way before that. I make my grandmother's recipe for chocolate chip biscuits which have condensed milk in and they are divine.
I wonder what interesting things happened in 1933 in the UK as that list is very US-centric.
I suppose that's why I remember them as a novelty and in the shops - there isn't, as far as I know, a UK tradition of them, but people do make them at home now. There wojuld have been the rationing problem until 1953.
