"Everything I've Got In My Pocket"

Kel and I are going to the Wolverhampton Civic Hall tonight to see the Finn Brothers (formerly of Crowded House). They've got a new album out so hopefully it will be a great night, even more so if they continue their trend for playing classic Crowded House songs as part of their set. What is exciting me even more though is the prospect of seeing Minnie Driver (yes, the Minnie Driver!) as their support act.

Kel bought me her debut album, "Everything I've Got In My Pocket", at the end of last week and I've listened to it quite a lot over the past few days. I can safely say that while other stars jump on certain bandwagons in a bid to gain more fame and fortune via ventures that they clearly aren't cut out for, Minnie's talent is there for all to witness. The Bruce Springsteen cover "Hungry Heart" aside, she's written the songs herself, plays guitar and has had full input into making the album her own. She has always had musical aspirations and considered being a singer many moons ago before her acting career took off.

As her own website explains, "Minnie began singing in London's jazz clubs as a teenager, eventually joining a band that landed a deal with Island Records. She was in the midst of negotiating a solo deal with EMI when the hit film Circle of Friends came along and changed her life. But she always longed to return to music, and with the release of Everything I've Got in My Pocket, Driver has made the album she's been dreaming of making since her teenage years. Backed by a group that includes members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band, the album deftly blends Driver's sultry, bittersweet vocals with sparse, atmospheric pop and a hint of contemporary folk. With ten original songs and an unforgettable cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," Driver's debut marks the arrival of an accomplished singer-songwriter."

What is even more heart warming though is the fact that when asked "What is on your rider?" (Metro last week), she responded by saying that she's a nobody, totally new to the business and that she hasn't got a rider as she will be lucky enough to get a cheese and pickle sandwich! So while other stars think they can swap careers like there's no tomorrow and automatically gain the success and attention that come with them, Minnie has a very honourable attitude and is as humble as anything, treating her musical venture as a fresh new start.

When I listened to the album for the first time, my eyes welled up and I felt so proud of Minnie. It just took my heart and overloaded it with warmth. The track "Invisible Girl" sounded so amazing, I nearly cried. I won't have a bad word said against her. She's an awesome talent. I hope she does really well and that she gets a good reception from the Wolverhampton crowd tonight. :)
