When I was six-ish I wanted my name to be Steve, because I thought Steve Austin the Six Million Dollar Man was the coolest guy in the world. But that didn't last long. I realized he was just an old cheap robot who had a boss named Oscar.
The name Richard is not unique but it has served me well over the years. There were four Rich's in my grade school class of 25 kids. We were like a gang of Richards, the coolest thing since chopped liver. So I had that going for me.
Then somewhere around the 5th grade it was obvious that I was going to be a lot taller than everyone else in my class. To distinguish me from the other 3 Richards, the kids started calling me Big Rich. Once the older kids heard that they spun it into Big Dick. I beat up anyone that called me Dick until one fine day as a freshman in high school.
I think it was just after last period and there were tons of 9-12 students hanging out in "the quad". As I walked up to my group of friends one of the obnoxious girls yelled "Hey Big Dick!". Of course the entire school froze, glanced at her, then starred at me. At first I wanted to rip her fucking head off, but I realized the kids were not pointing and laughing at me, there was just a low murmur of girls whispers, then business as usual.
Haha! That girl did me a great favor. I still wouldn't let anyone call me Dick, but once in a while that nickname is yelled at me in a public place and its really funny to see peoples reactions.
So as much as I'd love to have a unique name, the name Richard has provided good times and great laughs.
