Being here in Atlanta its a rarity that I'll listen to any of the stations I once did in Orlando, although I could easily enough on either "iheartradio" or "Tune In Radio" - I just don't. Some days I miss the Monsters in the Morning, The Morning Mix (which used to be Scott & Erica in the morning until Erica was unceremoniously fired not long before we left), the Philips Phile and more, and yet I don't bother to try and listen in anymore.
In either case, something this morning made me wonder what was going on with the gang at Real Radio. Imagine my surpise to find out there've been a couple of shake up's recently...
Back on December 12, 2012, the following was published:
Two weeks ago, the Twitterverse was set afire when longtime listeners of WTKS 104.1 FM's Real Radio went ballistic over the unceremonious canning of "Monsters in the Morning" personality Daniel Dennis. Everybody speculated about WTF happened, but in the end, Dennis told his fans via a YouTube video that his departure was the result of a contract dispute - due to "internal issues" he had on the show, he wanted to be allowed to work without a contract. Clear Channel, apparently, wasn't having that. So they let him go. Typical radio stuff, we thought, until Dec. 6 - a date being called by one longtime Clear Channel Denver DJ, Uncle Nasty, "National Firing Day." In markets across the country, hundreds of Clear Channel staff and personalities were let go.
One other casualty of the shakeup was an entire awesome local talk show, "SBK Live." Despite its seeming popularity, the station yanked host Soul Brother Kevin and his crew, who'd been doing the show for the past four years, from their 7-11 p.m. slot. The final "SBK Live" was broadcast on Dec. 7 from a McDonald's in South Orlando, and it was something of a wake for the show - listeners mourned and protested, the crew told war stories and made the best of it. Unlike a lot of those hit during Clear Channel's National Firing Day, Soul Brother Kevin landed on his feet - he lost his show, but he was given a gig on "Monsters in the Morning" (presumably, the one that opened up when Dennis was kicked off). Incidentally, SBK got his start with Real Radio as an intern with the Monsters eight years ago.
But it seems that isn't all. On June 26, 2013, Buckethead left the station:
BUCKETHEAD posted on the show's Facebook page, "Yes, THE BS is done from REAL RADIO. Will I trash anyone... absolutely not. Why? I really have nothing bad to say. Can I explain the whole thing and how it panned out? Nope...not right now. It's not as easy as some people seem to think it is. Will I miss REAL RADIO? More than anyone will ever know. The REAL RADIO gig was a dream come true for me. I had always had the utmost respect for the shows (past and present) that were on TKS and still do. I hope that you can understand why I can't get into all of the details on this right now." He added that he "knew... I couldn't get to where I wanted to here in ORLANDO" and "made the choice to move on professionally so I could move on personally."
He's doing a gig here in Atlanta now...
Just what the hell is going on down there?
