Ilya Khrzhanovsky seems to have succeeded in reproducing something like a corner of Stalin's Russia. Almost enough to make me consider reading GQ regularly.
Elsewhere, "
I be like whoa"* must, I think, represent the greatest violence done to English so far in four words. I was willing to respec' it on those grounds until I discovered it was derived from Aly and AJ's 2007 song "
Like whoa." The episode of America's Next Top Model which spawned it marks a new low even in that programme's miserable history. BTW: whoa or woah? I incline to the latter, but perhaps that just marks me as an old-timer?
* Here's why I can't play scrabble: I started to think about how to translate this into the English I know and the first thing that came to me was a footnote from Dune: "Kull Wahad!" (trans: I am profoundly moved). Which is itself an unpleasant mangling of Arabic, meaning "all is one!"
