CHARACTER NAME: Tohru Honda
SERIES: Fruits Basket
JOB IN TRIOU: Student and Ayame's model! Also part-time cleaning girl.
BACKGROUND AND PERSONALITY: Once upon a time in that magical land of Japan--because Triou seems to attract all the elevens--there was once a family of sexy, sexy people! They were pretty well-known--ironically, for their reclusiveness; the head of the family, Akito, did not allow the family to interact much with the rest of the world. Therefore, it caused quite the commotion when one group of the family decided to hire a cleaning girl from the "outside."
That girl happened to be Tohru Honda! Having lost her father at a really young age, she became extremely attached to her mother, Kyoko. Not wanting her father's memory to die, though, she adopted his personality and mannerisms, and for a long time, the mother and daughter were happy! ... Until, a few months after Tohru started high school, fate decided to be a douchebag and take Kyoko away too.
After receiving the news that Kyoko had died in a car accident, Tohru was initially super-depressed, but she got better! Packing up and keeping a special picture of her mother, she then moved in with her grandfather, and all was well until their house needed to be renovated! He asked Tohru to go stay with one of her friends, but she didn't want to impose on them--although she told him she was doing so, she instead decided to get a part-time job as a cleaning lady and start... camping out in the middle of nowhere.
One day, there was a strong storm that caused a landslide that buried her tent--when Tohru came home from school, she freaked, since the beloved picture of her mother was still in there. Even though it seemed hopeless, she needed to get her mom back--and found herself face to face with Yuki Sohma, one of the most popular boys in school.
Turned out that the land Tohru was camping out on was owned by the Sohmas, and that it was technically illegal for her to be staying there. However, Yuki's cousin, Shigure, decided to take her in, in exchange for housekeeping services. She accepted, and was welcomed into that part of the Sohma family. Soon after she started living with them, another Sohma, Kyo, came to live with them too! He... was not as accepting as the other two, but things got better.
One by one, Tohru was introduced to the other Sohma family members--one of whom was Ayame Sohma, Yuki's, uh... special brother. Taking an instant like to her, he invited her to come with him to Triou, where he planned to open a clothing store. She didn't want to leave Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure, but also felt she had overstayed her welcome. Ayame had also offered her another job as a model for said clothing store, and promised to take care of her schooling, shelter, and expenses, so she packed up and left, with nothing more than a note to say goodbye to her surrogate family.
Tohru has always been a kind person--so much that, when she was cast as a wicked stepsister in her class's rendition of Cinderlla, she couldn't bring herself to stay in-character. She's hopelessly optimistic, energetic, clumsy, and a bit naive, which draws a lot of people to her. She also always speaks politely, a habit she picked up from her late father. Though she does have her sad moments like everyone else, she never lets it show--which leads into my next point.
One huge thing abut her is that she cares much more for other people than herself, doing anything she can to please them, for one of the very few things she hates is being a burden to others, even if they're the ones offering to help her. As a result, she has a nearly unbreakable habit of apologizing for everything. For example, even though Ayame assured her that he'd take care of all her finances if she came to work for him, she still insists on keeping her cleaning girl job, working part-time at various companies, including both Black Out and Zenith.
The aforementioned trait really starts to show when someone she knows gets sick or hurt--after losing her dad to illness and her mom to an accident, it's an unconscious thing. And, on the subject of her mom! Even though she's deceased, Tohru is amazingly loyal to Kyoko--in one such case, Tohru promised that she'd finish high school, since her mom never did, which was one of the hooks in her decision to leave for Triou. She keeps at least one picture of her mom with her at all times; the most important ones are the one in her wallet, and the framed picture Yuki helped her salvage from her tent. She enjoys "conversing" with her mother, so, more often than not, if ever you come across her talking to herself, that's most likely what's going on.
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE: Ah, it's so nice and sunny today! It's the perfect day to be outside. I'm sure Mom thinks so too. But today is also really busy too! Ayame-san says we've got something really special planned for today, so I'm really looking forward to that. Plus, I have to work tonight, so I need the energy. Um, let's see, there was something else I was supposed to do...
Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there. Ah, the whole reason I came here was to advertise Ayame-san's shop! Yes, that's right. Um, anyway! Sohma Ayame-san's store, Ayame-san, is having a very important sale right now! A-all of his specially-made maid outfits are on sale this weekend only, so, if you're interested, please stop by! I'll do my best to answer any questions you have right now. Here, please take a flier, too--
--EEK! S-sorry! I didn't mean to knock you over, Customer-san! I didn't see that rock. Aaah, are you sure you're okay? D-do you need help with that? Please, if there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to say anything! I have to make this up to you somehow. Here, please take my card--see, I didn't knock anything over that time!
ANYTHING ELSE? Manda loev tl;dr TAT; Like Kia said, I'm also happy to work out stuff with future Furuba appers!
