I need to make a Zebra icon. XD

Here's more Komatsu loving, haha. And this time with Zebra. @___@ All I need now is a Sunny story and my collection is compleeeete!

------------

“I heard that, boy!” Zebra bent close to Komatsu with an unnerving expression of wrathful mischief. He wore wide angry eyes and a mean grin -- on the left side of his face, stiches closed a wide gash that would have literally extended the grin to his ear. “You don’t want me to come with you, is that it?”

Poor Komatsu shook uncontrollably, meeting Zebra’s glare with his own fearful eyes. He knew from the start that Zebra had overheard his distant conversation earlier using his fantastically sharp “hell ears” and also knew he was dangerously close to becoming a bloody smear on the surrounding concrete .“I-I’m sorry... I didn’t know you all that well,” he said, his voice reduced to a quivering whisper. “And I got carried away and s-said...”

“Huh?” Still grinning, Zebra brought his face even closer. So close, it seemed, Komatsu could have sworn he felt the rage radiating off him like body heat. “You said what?”

“I... I got carried away and said something cocky!” Komatsu finally shouted, in anxious desperation. “So please forgive me...”

Cocky. That dreaded word. It happened to describe Zebra’s pet peeve -- more like his beserk button, actually. And Zebra made it quite clear that whatever person to put on airs in his presence would soon contribute to the gorefest that Zebra left behind when somebody pissed him off.

“You got COCKY??” That did it. Teeth gnashed, stiches snapped. The stiches fell away away to release that wide grin, with big sharp teeth. It seemed Zebra’s jaws could swallow Komatsu whole in one bite. His scarred, muscular trunk-like arms seemed to swing out menacingly, straight for the jugular.

“Eeeep!” Komatsu could only squeeze his eyes shut and wait for his punishment.

But the punishment didn’t come.

Zebra had paused to indulge in the sound of Komatsu’s heartbeat. His “hell ears” made a distant heartbeat sound like a pounding drum; the sound of a taken breath became a strong gust of wind. Zebra had experience with countless beating hearts and such, and by now could measure the nature of an organism just by listening to it.

Komatsu’s heart was beating wildly. It was no surprise that Komatsu was afraid of him. To Zebra, this heartbeat felt small... delicate. But this was a heart belonging to a someone who stuck to the truth knowing full well of the consequences. It belonged to someone choosing to take responsibility for his actions despite his overwhelming fear.

It was true that Komatsu was meek and fragile on the surface. But inside, that little heart was strong.

As Komatsu slowly opened an eye and peeked up warily, Zebra decided he would let the previous insult slide for now. By then, his intent had melted away to feelings he hadn’t ever recalled having.

He wouldn’t tell Komatsu about that, of course. He wouldn’t want the boy to get cocky over it.
