Henry was supposed to have a baby sister.
He had waited patiently for three long years, so the moment his mom told him that his baby sister would soon arrive in nine months, he could not be not delighted. Little Henry started to count the following months and diligently prayed night after night just to make sure he would eventually see his baby sister.
Unfortunately, his counting stopped in the fifth month, because the news of his mother got his baby sister miscarriage broke his heart into pieces.
But as the time went by, not long after that, the neighbor invited his family to come over for dinner. The family was just new in their neighborhood and they thought it was good to meet new people to brighten up the atmosphere.
It was later when he couldn’t take his eyes off the pink cradle placed in the living room. There was something moving, he was quite unsure, but he found it interesting.
“Oh Henry, let me introduce you two. Say hello to baby Amber.”
Henry couldn’t forget the way her eyes crinkled into a smile when her tiny little hand circled around his thumb softly. That was the day he let his heart being snatched away.
Hello Amber. Let me be your brother forever.
“Good luck for your exam tomorrow, oppa.”
Henry turned around, smiling mischievously, “I thought you’re never talking to me again?”
Amber pouted, recalling the scene of her cursing him last night over a random fight. “Shut up.” She shoved a paper bag towards him, somehow feeling defeated. “I just come because mom forced me to give this to you or else I’m being kicked out. So yeah, here I am, ready to make peace and talk to you again.”
Henry laughed at her bitter words. Opening the inside of the paper bag carefully, his eyes sparkled the moment he acknowledged the content, “Strawberry shortcake!”
Amber looked at him disbelievingly, doubting the fact that he’s three years older than her but eventually failing to notice that her lips already betrayed her for smiling along with him.
“Your mom’s cooking is the best, Am. Please let her know that I’m forever grateful.” Henry grabbed the cake happily when he talked more, “What about you?”
She lifted an eyebrow, “What about me?”
“Don’t you have something for me too? To wish me good luck?” He asked again, mouth still munching, and the flakes of the cake stuck near his lips.
Amber paused for a moment before deciding to lean in and kiss him softly in the cheek. She could feel him frozen under her touch. “Good luck!”
Henry dropped the remaining cake and blinked for a few times, practically ignoring Amber who made her move towards the door safely.
“Wipe your lips up, oppa. It’s gross.”
“Hey Amber, do you have a boyfriend?”
Amber accidentally met her high school girlfriends after work, and later found herself being dragged into some sort of small reunion at the nearest bar. The music was playing hard, and she was a hundred percent sure that her hearing would never be the same again.
“Did you say something?” She asked back, her eyes narrowing in attempt to focus.
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
Amber laughed and shook her head, “Why do you ask that?”
Her friend made the confused look evident all over her face, “Weren’t there someone who always following you around everywhere back then?”
The other girl nodded excitedly, “I know that guy! It was Henry, wasn’t it? How did it turn out between you two?”
Amber was about to answer when she noticed the new guest coming their way from the front door. “You’re late. We’re just talking about you.”
“How about me?”
The girls looked up, turning their direction at the sudden addition member who set his eyes on Amber only. They couldn’t help but gasped when they saw the man kissed Amber’s forehead tenderly.
“But you just said that you don’t have a boyfriend! And this is Henry and you and--”
Amber increased the confusion by laughing very hard. She elbowed Henry to take his part.
”She’s right. I’m not her boyfriend, I’m her husband.”
