Meta about how Percy/Annabeth are amazing

Nov 30, 2011 15:32

A challenge on fantasyverse was to create an infographic or write meta on something fantasy related. And since my thoughts are all filled up with Percy/Annabeth, I decided to try to express my feelings for them and write meta on why I ship them (and everyone else should to!) *Major spoiler warnings for all 5 of the PJO books as well as both books in the Heroes of Olympus series

Why Everyone Should Ship Percy/Annabeth
(or at least the reasons why I do)
So Percy and Annabeth are this completely adorable, believable, and real (except for the fact that they each have a parent who is a Greek god) couple that come from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and follow up series The Heroes of Olympus books. Now these are children’s books about how the Greek gods are real and alive, chilling at the top of the Empire State building, and occasionally (or in some cases more then occasionally) have children with humans called demi-gods. That is what the series is about, mainly it’s title character Percy Jackson finding out that he is a son of Poseidon. Now you don’t really expect to have this amazingly well written, angsty, lovingly build up romance come from this children’s book series but you would be wrong to think that. But  RR makes it in a way that he weaves this relationship into the pages without dragging down the whole story and making it all about the couple. You have to remember that romance is really not even close to the genre this book series falls in, which makes their progression all that much more amazing. I for one never expected to fall so in love with this couple after picking up the first book, post seeing the movie, and becoming so enthralled by them.

Now at the start of the series Percy is this kind of clueless hero, not in tune with people’s emotions, messes up a lot, basically just really lucky with all the stuff that the world throws at him. And Annabeth, well Annabeth is this strong, kind of closed off, kickass girl (and should I mention that they start the series when they are twelve? That could be important), who has spent the majority of her life (more then any other camper) at Camp Half-Blood (where all the demi-gods live because it can protect them from the every day Greek monsters that are out to get them). It's important to understand that Annabeth is not helpless, she could take Percy in a fight and it's part of what I love about her. Annabeth has been my favorite character from the start. She is not some damsel that Percy needs to save, they are equals through and through. Immediately she dislikes him because he turns out to be the son of Poseidon and her mom, Athena, and Poseidon just happen to be rivals. Not a smooth start to this ship, where their first meeting at her telling him ‘You drool when you sleep.” But they grow up before our eyes. Soon they are on a quest together, tolerating each other, being embarrassed when they have to ride on the tunnel of love, to somewhere along the way becoming friends. And that is kind of how their story goes with every book allowing for a little bit of growth until the end of The Last Olympian where they would do anything for each other.

As they grow up over the series, they eventually become best friends. They are tied together, they care about each other, and you get the feeling that their could be something more. It’s this progression that makes me never understand when people who hate them claim they had no build up, or they were rushed, or they came out of nowhere. I wonder, did they read the same books as me? Did anyone really not expect them not to get together? I spotted it from the first book, these two crazy kids with their funny nicknames were just made for each other. Their personalities mess in a way that allows them to balance their more harsh qualities when they are together.

Over the five books in the PJO series, this is a lot of evidence pointing to the fact that these two are falling for each other. But it is not an easy ride. This couple is so lined with angst that you might even shed a few tears (whether it’s from frustration or sadness is up to you) waiting for their moment. Even when he gives them their first kiss and you think finally something is going to happen, at the end of the book you’re left with “ I was glad to be with her, but it also kind of hurt, and it hurt when I wasn’t with her, too.” He really doesn’t give them couple a break until the final book in the series, then follows up that perfection with a series that has them separated for the first two books, no one knowing where Percy is, only to find out that he doesn’t remember anything (except Annabeth of course, but we’ll get to that later).

I could go on and on and on about this couple and why I love them that could probably turn into it’s own book series so I figured the best way to demonstrate my point is to add a bullet list of all the things that are important to them and why I ship them.

  • “You drool when you sleep.”
  • Because Annabeth would choose his side over her mom’s because he’s her friend
  • Their nicknames for each other are Seaweed Brain and Wise Girl
  • Because he missed her over the summer
  • Annabeth trusted Percy to watch after her when she wanted to hear the Siren’s song
  • She was glad he wasn’t a guinea pig
  • He thought he looked really good dressed up on Circe’s island
  • They won the chariot race and Annabeth kissed him on the cheek
  • He knew that Annabeth was alive and broke the rules of camp to go find her
  • He missed her and her talking about architecture all the time (and he actually remembered some of what she said)
  • The goddess of love ships them
  • He held up the sky for her
  • They have matching grey streaks in their hair
  • He was going to be sick when he thought she would join the Hunters
  • They danced and the song was “a little sad, but maybe a little hopeful, too”
  • They were going on a “date” that wasn’t a date to the movies together
  • Because she broke the rules and sat down at the Poseidon table with him
  • “I was aware of everything in the room. I felt like I could read the tiniest print on any book on the shelves. Annabeth's hair smelled like lemon soap. She was shivering.”
  • They were looking at maps
  • The way they get embarrassed when they accidentally hold hands or hug, especially if someone catches them
  • Because she kissed him first so suddenly, he almost couldn’t move
  • He came back to her from Ogygia
  • Jealous Annabeth and clueless Percy are kind of cute
  • “I was glad to be with her, but it also kind of hurt, and it hurt when I wasn't with her, too.”
  • She was starting to be seriously beautiful
  • They were kind of going on a date to the fireworks together
  • She made his head fuzzy
  • She was his tie to his mortal life
  • He wanted a kiss for good luck, and instead she told him to come back alive
  • Annabeth took a knife for him, without even knowing where his weak spot, she just knew he was in trouble
  • He told her where his Achilles spot was and it tingled when she touched it
  • “She look at me, like she was drinking in the fact that I was still here. And I realized I was doing the same thing. The world was collapsing, and the only think that really mattered to me was that she was alive.”
  • Annabeth was just as worried about him taking the offer to become a god as he was when he thought she as going to become a Hunter
  • He declined becoming a god, because he wanted things to change, to be with her
  • She can kick his butt
  • She’s never going to make things easy for him
  • Even the other campers were waiting for them to get together
  • Because they had the best underwater kiss of all time
  • After they got together, it was the best two weeks of his life
  • Annabeth chose to stay in New York to be close to him
  • The way she calls him her boyfriend
  • Because she searched for him non stop when he went missing and could tell you exactly how long he had been gone
  • The only thing he could remember when Hera took his memories was Annabeth
  • “Also, he was reluctant to share his one clear memory: Annabeth's face, her blonde hair and gray eyes, the way she laughed, threw her arms around him, and gave him a kiss whenever he did something stupid. She must have kissed me a lot, Percy thought. He feared if he spoke about that memory to anyone, it would evaporate like a dream. He couldn't risk that.”
  • He just wanted to find Annabeth
  • He imagined his future at the Roman camp, and it involved Annabeth and seeing their kids playing
  • He would sacrifice the world for her
  • Because they are equals in every way
  • Because when they finally reunite, it’s going to be epic (or at least it better be)

There you have it. It might not be pretty, but it kind of got away from me and I really just had to wrap it up. And I apologize if there are any errors, I had to write this up before I went to work. And I'm sure I could make this a lot better if I didn't procrastinate and write it in just an hour.
