Once upon a time, there was a duck named Fred. He really wanted to be a super hero, so he wore a red cape everywhere he went. One day, while Fred was swimming in his favorite pond, he saw a little girl fall into the water. This was his chance! He rushed over, grabbed her shirt with his bill, and swam furiously, struggling to pull her to safety.
Once he got to the shore, he lay panting and exhausted. Then he noticed the little girl shivering. It was February, and she was very cold. So he tugged off his cape and covered her with it. Then he quacked and quacked, as loudly as he could, until he got the attention of her Mommy and Daddy. They had been worried sick at losing sight of her. Now they ran over, scooped her up in their arms, and thanked Fred profusely. They went off to take her inside, somewhere warm and safe.
Fred flapped his wings and jumped for joy. Suddenly, he found himself airborne. He was... flying? Having worn a constraining super hero cape all his life, he hadn't realized what his wings were good for. Now he'd saved a girl's life and he had super powers, too. He didn't have to wish or pretend anymore. He was a real hero!
Shortly thereafter, the little girl returned to the pond, and she and Fred became the best of friends. They went on numerous adventures together and accomplished many heroic deeds. But those are tales for another time. We leave Fred, now, happy and confident, truly the bravest of ducks.
