Summary: The Howling Commandos find Tony alive in Reed's lab. Steve visits him at the hospital, and waits for him to wake. Fix-it for Ultimates #27-28.
Why I like it: It’s the angsty side of hurt/comfort and it’s like catnip to me. I only enjoyed the Ultimate Universe in its later runs and the Ultimates comic is actually pretty great with all kinds of crazy world ending scenarios and team building and, well, dying Tony bonding with his talking brain tumor that is actually an Infinity Gem. This is set after the evil Reed Richards cuts the Infinity Gem out of Tony’s brain. It’s Steve suffering when he realizes that he want Tony to live against all odds and that maybe the two of them have missed all their chances. It’s mostly him obsessively sitting by his bedside and sorting through his own feeling and coming to grips with what he feels. It’s really intense and not as much on the comfort side as on the physical hurt side for Tony and the emotionally upset side for Steve. But it does come with comforty moments that are delicious.
