FanExpo & other conventions

So, FanExpo Vancouver was last weekend! The second annual one; it's hard to believe it's already been a year since the first one. I volunteered one morning at the Can't Stop the Serenity booth again, which was fun. I'm going to miss the event itself this year because it's the same weekend as Phoenix Comic Con, but it's still fun to help promote it. I'm making mini!Firefly crochet dolls for the silent auction (last year I made big ones, but this year I'm just doing small ones); as much of the cast as I get through before the event. Finished Mal and Kaylee, and almost done Jayne. I had mini!Mal with me at the booth since he was the only finished one last weekend. It's great to connect with the fans and meet people and talk about the event.

Really the best thing about Vancouver FanExpo for me is that it's local and therefore I know a bunch of people. Kept running into people I knew, and walked around with various friends. Couple of my co-workers who are geeks came. It was their first convention and they were nervous about it but they totally fit in and had a lot of fun. So yay! I got to meet Michael Hogan and chat for a couple of minutes (love it when actors have no line up - you can just go up and talk). Mentioned having lived on Bowen because I think it's cool he lives there (it's such a small community, no doubt we know a lot of the same people) and also I briefly sort of knew one of his sons. Not in a creepy stalker way though lol. I hope. He gave me and my friend K a free autograph so that was super nice of him! Cool guy, and his panel was interesting as well. He led everyone in a rousing "So say we all!" at the end of the panel - very cool to say those words with Saul Tigh himself. ;)

Also FINALLY got to see James Marsters after all these years. He did a joint panel with Juliet Landau (who I saw in Toronto at Fanexpo 2006) and he was really entertaining. Got some obligatory (annoying) fan requests to say some lines from Buffy/sing something from OMWF and he did so on both counts! Which was cool. :) I had planned to get a photo op with him at 3:30pm on Sunday, but when I went to pick up a ticket at 2pm they told me that the photo op had been at 12:30 and there wasn't another one. WTF schedule, way to change last minute without telling anyone. Saved $60 I guess, but I was still bummed. I've waited 10 years and didn't manage to get a photo op or autograph with him in the end... :(

Anyway, I went dressed as Coulson again, and got killed by 2 separate Lokis. Black Widow tried to save me, but alas it was too late... pictures under cut.

(I had 3 separate friends yelling that at various points lol. so amusing.)

Loki #1

Loki #2

Dying tragically in Natasha's arms. At least she will avenge me! :)

Two conventions this year down, at least one more to go! Less than one month until Phoenix Comic Con... so excited. Can't believe I'm going. Aside from the massive awesomeness that will be meeting the entire Babylon 5 cast, John Barrowman will also be there! Woot! And a few other good guests, too (Jewel Staite for one).

In preparation, I've finally gotten off my ass and I'm completing my B5 rewatch. I stopped at 5X20 something like 4-5 months ago because the last 2 eps make me cry so much lol. I need to be in a certain mind space to watch them. Watched Objects at Rest this afternoon (and yes, cried a lot), and will watch Sleeping in Light this evening. That episode kills me every time, but it's so good... I just have a lot of emotions about this show. ;) But hey, when I'm done I will finally continue my rewatch with the TV movies (including Lost Tales which I never actually fully watched...) and maybe even Crusade. I never did finish Crusade, after all. It will be amusing to watch Daniel Dae Kim in it - that was the first thing I ever saw him in, and at the time I inexplicably didn't like him. But now I think DDK is awesome, so it'll be fun to see him again in it! Pre-Lost, pre-H5O...

Also apparently I'm going to Wincon in Vegas this October. Yay? Hotel is super cheap at least, and flights aren't too bad. I may fly from Bellingham... $200 return versus $400. Even with the bus to Bellingham it'll be cheaper. I've never been to Vegas before, so it'll be fun! Need to save up a bit in advance, though; Phoenix is basically blowing my convention budget for the year. I'm getting the full B5 cast photo op ($250 split between 3 people, so really not that bad), plus John Barrowman, plus autographs of as many B5 actors as I can afford. Autograph pricing isn't up yet so it's hard to know. I have a copy of this art print that I bought at Emerald City Comic Con last year, and I want to get it signed by everyone... or at least most of them. (so sad to think that 3 of the people on that art print, plus more not on the print, won't be there... As I was watching Objects at Rest and the last scene with G'Kar, I couldn't help but get teary eyed thinking that I will meet almost everyone on the cast... but not him. It would have been amazing to have met him; he was so talented and brought out so much emotion on that show).
