Evan Lorne had always been an explorer. He had always known he’d wanted to travel.

When he was two, his mother had to retrieve his crawling form from the garden next door. He was having a conversation with Fluffy, their dog.

When he was twelve, he purposefully took the wrong bus and ended up on the other side of town.

When he was fifteen, he convinced his parents to let him go visit his Aunt in Washington by himself.

When he was eighteen, he left home for college, going to the East Coast. As far as money issues and parents would allow.

When he was twenty three, he joined the Air Force. The more he saw of the world, the more he wanted to see. It was so large and full of possibilities; he worried he wouldn’t get to see it all.

When he was thirty one, he stepped aboard the Daedalus. He stood staring out of the viewscreen on the otherwise empty observation deck as Earth became a smaller and more distant pearl of green-blue. He watched until it was just a speck of dust and then nothing at all. He kept watching, mesmerised by all the stars that passed. Marvelling at how many of them had planets and life of their own. Wondering if he’d ever get to visit any of them.

He was so lost he didn’t even notice the other man slip into the room. Not until his arms were around him.

“It never gets old.” Steven Caldwell whispered into his ear. His voice was full of awe, despite the fact that Evan knows he’s seen it all and much more, plenty of times before.

“No and it never should.” He replied softly in agreement, as he leaned back into the solid form of his lover.
