an unexpected update. I did not think I would update this LJ, except that I have some news which makes me proud. if you feel like I have neglected reading your LJ lately, by the way, I have. sorry, I just have lost interest in LJ.

first, Hans Rickheit would like me to work on a webcomic once he has finished work on his current project, The Squirrel Machine. I feel flattered, obviously, and Hans draws like nobody's business (and he'll draw even better once he has the experience of drawing Squirrel Machine done) and still I have a few misgivings. his idea covers much the same territory as The Girl Who Put the Stars Out . for one thing, he wants to emulate old time children's stories. for another, the web comic would have a young girl protagonist. Hans has rejected one ideas I had as too similar to The Squirrel Machine (a house of infinite size once you get inside it) and another (statuary which come alive at night) as too clichéd which I can understand. I know what he means. he doesn't seem to realize that, as TVtropes.org has pointed out, trope does not equal cliché. we'll see how it goes. given the fact that Hans has a contract to finish The Squirrel Machine and has some ways to go, the collaboration shouldn't start for a while.
second, I worked on part of Honest John around one or two in the morning. I did not just work on any part but the "dangerous" part I had avoided writing. though I won't bore you you with excessive detail, Honest John, in its current state, began as me writing something and going on to writing Honest John and when i sat down to write a scene with Nelly Simple it turned into that scene. I turned that scene into the reflection of a prior scene already written, which also starts off with Nelly and the includes Moon and Caddy. movies influence my writing a lot in that I consciously borrow cinematic technique when writing. i use the prose equivalent of an extreme close-up, a reverse shot or, as here, a long tracking shot.

last, once I get the old MacBook fix, I will send off everything I have written so far of Honest John to a select group of readers who I sent this out to before. if you haven't read any of Honest John so far, you can request to read it by sending me a request via comments.
