a few minutes ago I had a brief conversation with a woman whose partner of fifty-two years had died eighteen days ago. he had died at ninety-two. she looked sixty, not like a woman in her early seventies. she stood taller than most women of today, let alone women of her generation. (as you age beyond forty, you start to shrink.) she wore her hair long. she talked like a younger woman too. she had no sign at all of grief or bitterness. just another day.

maybe the sorrow hadn't hit her yet... I don't know.
