last night I finished watching the anime Haibane-Renmei*, one of the original inspirations to thinking up Honest John, although I had not really watched it before and knew something of the plot though nothing of the plot or the characters.
to my surprise, a well figures into the plot. more than that, towards the end the plot parallels that of Honest John. to say more would give away the plot of both books. (crows turn up in a pretty big role as well in Haibane-Renmei though they have no significant role in Honest John.) Honest John has a more dark and elegaic tone.
I figure that I have had a rougher, harder life than Yoshitoshi ABe and gone through more. honestly, even Reki, the most wounded person in the story has fewer problems than I do or that many of my acquaintances do. still, I cried for the sake of the character because she reminded me of her.
without giving away too much, Reki acts in a way that I have realized that I have acted, not good for the sake of doing good but good for my own sake. (Honest John does not do that exactly. let's just say that he has his ability to manipulate people does not go away once he comes back as a ghost. in fact I may make more of that once I have seen the anime.)
I could actually review the series though I do not really feel like going in depth about it. it really did live up to my expectations. I would not put it in the class of the very best anime series. (I would put Serial Experiments lain or Neon Genesis Evangelion up there.) I envy Yoshitoshi ABe for his facility in visual arts and writing. the lighter moments and the love of landscape remind me very much of Tove Jansson and given the regard for which I have her (Jansson's) work that counts as very big praise from me.
*-as spelled in the opening credits. every source of information just spells it Haibane Renmei. no dash.

browsing through The Book of Irish Curses, within ten minutes I found a rationale for Honest John's curse that makes perfect sense. so I won't have it made vague or left to the imagination. I find writing the backstory more easy to write than present day action.
I would find it easy to imagine all the women of the village getting together, confronting John about the failure of his magical powers (I won't give away more than that) and forcing him out of Spray. since that would make the plot of the book impossible I will make it a little different than that.
anyway, I know how Honest John gets cursed. at this stage, I will have to watch it or the beginning of the book will get really slow, owing to all the backstory I have developed.

in general, though, I have avoided all work on Honest John. in fact, the last work I did on the book probably corresponds around about with the last entry I wrote on the book here.
