Not many years ago a boy was riding a horse home from school. It was late in the afternoon an the skies were growing dark. At a certain point a bridge was being repaired, and the boy had to ride his horse directly across the stream. It had been raining and the stream had risen. In the darkness the horse did not want to rush into the muddy water. As the boy tried to urge the horse on, a door opened in the farmhouse on the other side of the stream. Through the open door a lamp cast a path of light. In the beam of light the horse and the boy gained new courage and were able to cross the stream with confidence.

Sometimes death is described as crossing the stream from this world into the next. The wisest men in all ages have believed there is a life beyond the grave. When Jesus rose from the tomb on Easter morning, he made a path of light which takes away our fear of death. Death is not going down into darkness but up into light.

We decorate our homes and churches at Easter because life is meant to be beautiful.

Flowers, too show us that life is always coming back. During the winter the earth looks dead, except down in the sunny southland where it doesn’t get very cold. In other parts of our country the grass disappears in winter. The trees lose their leaves. But when spring comes the grass returns, new leaves appear on the trees, and flowers lift their lovely heads. This good earth has life which the cold cannot kill.
