Signal boost. Dammit, now I can't read Elizabeth Moon anymore.

I refuse to link Elizabeth Moon's lovely (*sarcasm) rant about Muslims and assimilation and how WE MUST ALL BE ASSIMILATED (read: erase our own cultures to fit into WASP-y middle class US culture) for immigration to succeed. Yeah, um, no.

However! I'm doing a signal boost because shweta_narayan is a beautiful, brave person and wrote out her own experiencesRead more... )

Oh god, really? I remember loving some of her early books, but no. Not acceptable.

Oh lord, I just read up on it a little, and sweet lord, no. Though some of the refutations are pretty spectacular. Why the hell should muslims be expected to perform public penance for something extremists did, which, by the way, included the destruction of two mosques that were in the WTC? Did the rest of Christianity or the military have to prove themselves "fit" for citizenship after the Oklahoma City bombing? Do we grab the most scurrilous passages of the Torah and the Bible and then anxiously wring our hands over whether Christianity is itself a threat to the Constitution? wtf-ever.

I do find it upsetting though not surprising that this is coming from a former marine, though. The anti-islamic slurs and 'facts' I heard coming from my brother, which he had been told by his officers while working in Saudi Arabia as an enlisted man were hair-raising, and that was before 9/11.

What was infuriating was that he refused for months to listen to the refutation of my aunt who had worked closely with Islamic students for decades, because he had 'been there himself,' which included absolutely no meaningful conversation with a single non-US-military person in the weeks he was there. It was really horrifying. I can't even imagine what it's like now.

But anyway, Elizabeth Moon, ugh. I am going to go to your link now that I have that out of my system. *hugs*
