Arashi!fic - Message (Sho+Nino) for waxrose

Nov 10, 2008 00:32

The original prompt was "Sho/Nino cuddles" from waxrose. This was supposed to be a ficlet. And, er, ballooned out of control rather quickly. -_- Self-edited, so please let me know if there are bits that don't make sense.

For waxrose, who is awesome, and also for kegom, flange5, and nicocoer who are lovely and encouraging and make me glad to be part of fandom. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Title: Message (It's not really a secret)
Pairing: Sho+Nino, though really more like OT5
Rating: G
Current word count: ~2600
Notes: Unrepentant fluff. Just because. Um, waxrose, I hope you like it? ^^;; Not quiiiite what you'd asked for.

"Come over tonight. I have something I want to show you." Nino flopped heavily over Sho's back to peek over his shoulder at what he was reading. Sho's only reaction was to grunt at the sudden weight and take another sip of his coffee.

"Shooooo-chaaaaaan. ShoSho. Shoko." Nino admired Sho's dedication to his work at News Zero and was immensely proud of him, but it seemed sometimes that all he ever did on breaks anymore was sleep, eat, and read newspapers. Occasionally in varying combinations.

"Mm? I can only stay for a couple magic demonstrations. And I thought Ohno-kun was your usual guinea pig?" replied Sho absently.

Nino couldn't help but tsk a little at the way Sho was Not Paying Attention, and dug his chin sharply into Sho's shoulder. "Not magic. Kaachan's on some onsen trip with Ohnomama, and Neechan's out. Come over." He stole a pastry from the box next to Sho's elbow.

Sho turned his head to look at Nino, one eyebrow raised. "I was going to eat that one. And you want me to come over that much? What's going on?"

"Just go. We all do what he wants eventually anyway," Ohno advised as he shuffled over and stole a pastry for himself. He settled in on Sho's other side, patted him on the shoulder and started munching his sweet bun. Nino smiled at him gratefully.

"You too, Satoshi-kun?" Sho sighed, and eyed Nino, who blinked innocently back at him. "It's not some kind of, of...existential crisis or Ni no Arashi, right? I should be free after 7."

Nino tapped the side of his nose. "It's a secret." He smirked, "And would I tell you if it was going to be a Ni no Arashi? Come hungry, I'll take care of dinner."

"Uwaa! A first! Nino's taking Sho out!" Aiba poked his head around the door frame.

"We should commemorate that. Too bad I left my camera at home." Jun shoved Aiba through the doorway, stopping by the table to ruffle Ohno's hair hello and nab a tart from Sho's box.

Nino smiled beatifically. "We're going on a date. At my house," he cooed. "So don't try to sneak by as Detective Aiba, got it?" His voice hardened as he poked at Aiba's powdered-sugar-coated cheek.

Ohno considerately moved Sho's (considerably emptier) box of pastries out of the way as he started thumping his head against the table.

******************************

Not sure what to expect, Sho arrived at Nino's house armed with a bottle of wine and fortified with the slim assurance that at least whatever happened, it probably wouldn't be as bad as the time with Aiba, the vacuum cleaner and the pancakes.

Nino opened the door looking a little harried, apron over his regular clothes and sleeves rolled up. "Come on in. You know where things are, I need to keep dinner from catching fire," he said, disappearing back around the corner. Sho left his shoes with the small pile in the entranceway and padded into the kitchen with the wine. He peered over Nino's shoulder at what was on the stove. "Mmm, that smells good. Can I help?"

"The only thing I'm letting you do with the food is eat it. Set the table instead," he ordered. Turning down the heat and eyeing the contents of the pan critically, Nino gave his stir-fry one last stir.

"Hey," Sho returned mildly, "I can too cook. Just not on TV with everyone making fun of each step. Here," Sho handed Nino a plate for the main dish, and set the table to the sounds of clinking bowls and plates and a softly muttered curse.

"You all right over there?" Sho called behind him. There, he patted the table, he could at least set a table properly even if nobody let him near a stove. Speaking of which, Nino had given no hint of what the occasion was. They usually met up for a meal out, if anything, and Nino wasn't the type to think much about food for himself, let alone cook for other people voluntarily.

"'M'fine, overheated fingers, don't worry Mother," Nino hollered back as he came through the doorway, plate in one hand, sucking on a couple fingers of his other hand.

Unfortunately, Sho continued to receive no answer throughout dinner, as they chatted comfortably about their work and the way Shun really needed to become the sixth member of Arashi to better torture Jun with and various inconsequential things. By the time he'd finished eating Nino's rather tasty meal, despite being fairly calm on the surface he felt like he really needed that wine with the way his imagination was running away with him.

Sho fiddled with his wine glass as he cautiously asked Nino, "So what did you want to talk to me about? Something that you can't tell the other members about? Did you get another movie offer? Is your family all right? Are you having Ohno's baby? Is someone having your baby?"

Nino stopped him before he could worry himself into a knot, holding up a hand with a half-incredulous, half-embarrassed laugh, "Whoa, whoa, Sho-chan, it's not that serious! But, um, come with me upstairs after we clean up before I answer that."

Sho acquiesced and helped Nino clean up the remains of dinner, holding in his questions and working in a companionable, if curious silence. The last time he had seen Nino this nervous and fidgety was before he'd gathered everyone together to tell them about going away to America to film a movie.

Once ensconced in Nino's room, Sho settled on one end of Nino's western-style bed and watched as Nino rummaged at the other end of the room. Despite the barely-controlled chaos of the bed, Sho was always a little surprised at how Nino's collection of games, manga and music was so neatly arranged and organized on the bookshelves around the room. Though now magic books and paraphernalia had taken a more prominent spot spread across the shelves and the bed.

By this time Nino had finished shuffling papers and had taken his guitar from its case. Climbing to sit cross-legged on the bed, Nino hauled the guitar into his lap and tossed a small stack of papers into Sho's. Ignoring Sho's questioning glance and busying himself with tuning the guitar, he gruffly told Sho, "Just read it. And tell me what you think, of course."

Sho skimmed through the whole thing once, then read it carefully line by line. He could feel Nino's piercing eyes on him the entire time, waiting for a reaction, though every time he glanced up from the papers Nino had his head bent over the guitar, hair falling over his eyes.

Sho finished his first close reading with a slow release of breath, letting the emotions that welled up from the power of Nino's words flow through him unexamined, savoring them. He was surprised at how quickly Nino broke, a demanding, "Well?" breaking the stillness between them.

Sho tried to find the words. "This...," a not-quite-flail at the words in his lap,"...I like it. A lot. It also reads like a giant love letter to Arashi," Sho finished quickly, not quite managing to hide a smile.

Nino groaned and flopped over his guitar, the tips of his ears turning pink. "Aargh. Matsujun will never ever let me live it down if this sees the light of day, then," he mumbled at the bedspread.

Sho chuckled. "No, it'll make him go all squishy and he'll try to hide it by punching us a lot and calling us sentimental morons." He paused to consider. "Well, and then he'll try to get over that and remember that you came up with the idea first and never let you live it down."

Nino groaned some more, but then his head came up. "'Us'? So that means you want to collab with me on this? It's just, with the anniversary coming up, I thought I might be jumping the gun but this idea fell into my head a while back and--" He stopped when Sho put a hand on his shoulder and smiled at him.

"Nino. You're babbling. What are you worried about? The two of us worked on "Sketch" together and the members loved it." Sho reached out and raised Nino's chin up from where he'd dropped back over his guitar again.

Refusing to meet his eyes, Nino muttered, "But that was five years ago, and we were younger and stupider and didn't know any better. Now ever since I had to write that letter," Nino's eyes when he met Sho's calm gaze were frustrated, "the words aren't coming out right, to convey what I..." Nino gave up with a growl. Then he squeaked and tried to pretend he hadn't when Sho couldn't stand it any longer and reached across the space between them to hug him.

"Augh, geroff! You've been spending too much time around Aiba," grumbled Nino, though not before leaning into the hug for a bit.

Sho mock-pouted at that and said, "You know, we're Arashi. So it'll work no matter what. We'll get the message," answering Nino's unvoiced question.

"It still needs a hell of a lot of fine-tuning though. You wanna hear what I have so far?"

It took a bit of maneuvering on the small bed, but Sho got around to sit next to Nino so they could both look at the lyrics as Nino played his guitar. Sho watched Nino's face as he sang, concentrating on getting his fingering and the words to match. He marveled again at how Nino could be so glib and tricky and in control for the cameras but let that part of him melt away as he poured his heart into his music.

When he finished, Sho slung an arm over Nino's shoulders and gave him a chaste kiss. Nino smiled at him, bemused, as Sho pulled away. Then his eyes narrowed. "Wait, wait, that isn't a proper kiss of appreciation for my talents. Come back here." Nino reached out a free hand to tug on the back of Sho's head and reeled him in for a better kiss that left them both breathing a little faster. After Nino pulled away this time, he gave himself a good shake and said, "Okay, back to work. I have this urge to rip it all apart and I want to have some of your rap in there."

"Hmm, I'll start thinking on that. Let's clarify the theme, then we can tighten up the lyrics here..." Sho was perfectly content to stay like this the rest of the evening, leaning against Nino and feeling his warmth up and down his side, perfecting this song to show the other members. "Eep!" With the occasional grope from Nino, whose eyes were innocently on the lyrics sheet in front of them.

********************************

After a couple of weeks of working on the song in between filmings, rehearsals, interviews and photoshoots (during which Aiba playfully accused Nino of hogging Sho for nefarious purposes, to which Nino responded by sitting on him and tickling the hell out of him before Aiba could twist him off), Nino finally deemed the song fit for public consumption.

He still wasn't fully satisfied with it, but the message was clear enough for the others to hear it and give their input. Nino was grateful Sho made time for this project in addition to his studying for news and everything else, though after that first night Sho always showed up with a stack of newspapers to read. Then when they'd had enough of the song they would round out the evening with Sho reading, and absently plucking out cards at Nino's direction as he practiced a new trick.

Nino had a couple of butterflies left in his stomach when he told everyone in the break room that he had an announcement. But he pushed them down as Ohno woke up properly right away, sitting up straight where he'd curled up on the couch to wait attentively. Matsujun eyed him and Nino stared straight back; Nino had noticed his curiosity being piqued when he saw Nino had brought his guitar to work that morning. Jun sat Aiba down on the other end of Ohno's couch and settled on the arm, the better to lean on him and keep him under control.

But Aiba remained unsuppressed, fairly vibrating with curiosity and excitement.

"So, so, you guys have been keeping secrets from the rest of us for the last few weeks," Aiba said reproachfully. "So give. Is it your turn, Nino? Are you pregnant with Leader's baby this time? Or," he gasped melodramatically, "is it Sho-chan's?" Thankfully Matsujun thumped him so Nino didn't have to.

Nino took one last surreptitious deep breath, though he was sure Matsujun's sharp eyes caught it. Then Sho sent him a warm glance and his nerves settled. This was Arashi, after all, in all their silly, cool, idiotic glory. He slung his guitar around his neck and perched on the arm of the other couch with Sho. He grinned cheekily and started tuning his guitar as he said, "So I figured I didn't embarrass everyone nearly enough at 24-hour TV. And since our tenth anniversary is coming up...Sho-chan and I put this together." He finished tuning up, glanced over at Sho for the starting count, and began to play.

He didn't dare look too closely at anyone while he sang, though he caught a glimpse of Ohno out of the corner of his eye, nodding his head along to the beat and sticking his lip out with a look of concentration. So when he finished it didn't occur to him to brace himself for Aiba flinging himself off his couch and nearly bowling Nino off his perch in a bone-cracking hug.

"Ack, not the guitar, not the guitar! Watch it!" Nino yelped, as Sho moved over to put a steadying hand on his back and Ohno and Jun alternately got in the way and helped to keep the whole mess of flailing limbs from overturning. Nino thought he could feel Oh-chan squeezing his shoulder, quiet happiness and approval radiating out from him, but it was a little hard to be sure while he was trying to breathe around Aiba.

"This is awesome, Nino. I approve of this secret a lot!" He beamed at Nino as he wriggled with delight, his eyes suspiciously bright.

"It still needs a lot of work, everyone should put something into this, and-- oh nonononono, don't you dare cry, Aiba, you'll set the rest of us off!" Nino and Sho tried to get Aiba sit properly on the couch before they flailed off, while Ohno flapped his hands helpfully in Aiba's direction.

"What are you doing, Leader, trying to waft calm at them?" Jun said gruffly. Nino looked up at the odd note in Matsujun's voice to meet his slightly glassy eyes. Jun responded by punching him lightly in the arm and saying slowly, "It's good. I liked it, and I think the fans will like it." He gave Nino a lopsided smile. "Message received loud and clear. Though I hope you realize this is an even bigger love letter than all the Wink Up messages that you've ever written to Leader." His smile widened into a grin at Nino's grimace of acknowledgment. "Combined."
