The highest point in the Ozarks/Ouachitas is Mt. Magazine, which is 2753' above sea level. It barely meets the criteria to be called a mountain. Altitude shouldn't be a problem if you want to ride a bicycle or hike in it. Don't you guys ride through the San Gabriel Mountains? (Congrats on your state's new National Park, BTW!) I think those peaks are quite a bit taller and steeper. Are you thinking about coming out here? That would be cool! The Ozarks are quite beautiful, they don't get the national recognition they deserve.
IMG_0025 is of Black Mountain, taken from Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area, off the Talimena Scenic Byway, Arkansas and Oklahoma. I like the layering, too. I want to do a mosaic mural wall in my shower when I finally get around to repairing the master bathroom and I've been trying to take pictures to use as inspiration. I was hoping I'd get more on this trip, but fog happened. This IMG_0025 and IMG_0032 are the only ones that appeal to me for inspiration purposes from this trip.
Some of the other pictures were from Roaring River State Park, in Missouri; Pig Trail Scenic Byway, Arkansas; Mt Magazine Scenic Byway, Arkansas; some were taken from the balcony of our room at the lodge in Mt Magazine State Park; and off HWY 160 in Missouri. Guess next time I need to figure out how I should load the pictures so I can also write something about them.
The pictures were taken over a period of 4 days. The weather was great the first day as we drove from KC to Roaring River State Park. We should have taken the vultures and crows gathered on the chimney of our lodge the second morning as an omen. It was foggy and/or rainy most of the next 3 days. We originally planned to ride for a week, but we cut the trip short because the weather was getting worse. We had a couple times we had to pull off and wait out a storm and one afternoon we had to stop for the night a few hours early and hole up because a severe thunderstorm was roaring through. Lightning, hail, and horizontal rain, very bad weather for motorcycle riding. The fog affected visibility at times and so we'd have to slow down, wet roads were also a concern. We're mostly riding for the scenery anyway, not much into the speed thrills. I didn't mind the fog too much. I know we missed part of the scenery because of it, but fog has it's own kind of beauty.
We just have the one motorcycle. It's too big for me to handle, so Dan drives and I ride pillion.
