Children of Earth Day One quickie thoughts

First, thanks to everyone who came to the rescue yesterday! I love my Flist.

Here's a few thoughts about Day One.

Oh, Ianto. Ianto Ianto Ianto. I absolutely loved the scene with his sister, because for far too long Torchwood has never really focused on the realistic aspects of his and Jack's relationship.

Perhaps I'm seeing it from an American perspective. I mean, there's a superior in a relationship with a subordinate, they've been caught in a compromising position in the Hub, and they've danced together at Gwen's wedding. All are treated as no big deal. Why is that? I do think British attitudes are a bit more forward-thinking than our Puritanical views over here. Is it American TV?

I'm sure RTD wishes the world worked like this, where no one so much as bats an eyelash over their relationship. John Barrowman lives his life like this. In my experience, however, same-sex relationships are much more complicated. I guess what I'm really saying is that Torchwood makes it look easy, and it really isn't.

As fans we like to focus on the relationships between the characters to the exclusion of the real world sometimes. Wouldn't Ianto be questioning himself after loving Lisa? Wouldn't he find his attraction to his superior awkward when dealing with the rest of his co-workers (or, after the end of Series 2, co-worker)? And a thousand other questions.

I realize that the relationship between Jack and Ianto isn't the focus of the show, because hello, aliens. I also realize that many people don't want the show to become a relationship drama with monsters on the side.

But if you do take the steps to pair up a same-sex couple on a television show, there needs to be more scenes like the one between Ianto and his sister, and more scenes where Jack and Ianto are heard/seen discussing their relationship. It can't be an everyday thing, even if RTD wants it to be.

yummy ianto, torchwood
