Being My Sister's Friend

Feb 04, 2013 21:40

It's not easy being my sister's friend.

I don't mean she's a bad person, or anything like that. In fact, she's a really good person. Loyal, and helpful, and will do just about anything for her friends. She cares deeply about her friends, and will go to bat for them and watch their kids or grandkids and run to the store and do all sorts of things you would think a really good friend would do.

No, it's not because she's not a good friend.

It's because so many of her friends die.

Today, another one died. Ovarian cancer, this time.

It's always cancer. Is it Massachusetts that does it? Most of them are from there, maybe all of them. She always seems to be coming from or going to a funeral or shiva call.

I have one this week too. But the lady who passed was my mom's age. Not my sister's. She's my friend's grandmother. And my friend is my son's age. It's a very different thing. Not that it isn't sad; but everyone has a time limit. Shirley's expired more or less on time.

Judy's was way too early.
