Teachers in Los Angeles schools are not allowed to punish children in any way. Not only is physical punishment outlawed, but being spoken to in a loud voice, losing prized activities such as recess, experiencing time-outs or any other form of sanction are all expressly forbidden. The restrictions on teachers is amazing ...and disheartening. I am definitely not in favor of abusive treatment from or towards anyone but has common sense gone out the classroom window? Without discipline there is chaos, without consequences we not only paint an urealistic portrait of life but we set ourselves up to deal with a totally irresponsible society. How sad it is for us to be teaching children that things such as discipline, and responsiblity are stifling, when in fact those things give them more freedom.

i'm glad that my course took me other places than teaching. i used to think that i wouuld be good at it--and i do very well with my adult students in anesthesia--but. i'm from the generation that feared the playground peer patrols, the teacher's wrath, and horror of horrors--the trip to the principals office. (there was a vented paddle in the corner, and legend had it that he was not afraid to use it) my 6th grade teacher broke a yardstick over the rears of two of the boys in the class in one incident--and then she took them to the principal AND called their parents. for a couple of troublemakers, they were rather subdued for the next couple of days ( ... )

I've got it: put the teachers on the school bus going up and down the nearest freeway and let them do their thing there. Then if any of the kids act up, the driver can take the necessary action. The kids get educated but are also kept in check, plus they'll get to see places they're probably too lazy to go and see off their own backs. It's a win-win situation. Except if the bus suffers a blow out during an exam. That would be kinda tragic.
